Tonight's Blog for March 31, 2013

"LORD, YOU are such a blessing. Thank YOU, LORD for visiting us at MCC today! Today, we felt
your presence in our building, with each precious brother and sister who came in to worship, to read stories, to hear stories, to hug, to sing, to be hugged, to love and to be loved!" This is my prayer tonight for each of you, my readers, as we share these precious moments together!

How do we evaluate the activities of a day like this? Easter usually comes with high expectations and high preparation for the details like food, family, and fun. We have all felt that we should enjoy our Church time together, but usually expected that it was better if it were somehow enjoyed silently or secretly. This one day, we can sometimes feel that it is ok to "unleash the child" in us, and run to the line to get Easter Eggs or to have a "no-bake" cookie. This one day we all become free to wear a tie, a clip-on tie, mind you, or not wear one! GOD loves us if we are wearing or not wearing a tie or a suit coat! 

The human factor is a big part of my evaluation of these days. I know that folks in the room are there because they LOVE YOU, LORD. In our worship time, today, we heard songs that brought  "good tears" to the eyes of those who sang, or just listened. I saw multiple rows of beautiful folks, some related and some not. I saw a dad who was with his sons, and they were so glad to be with their dad! As a son, I know that they won't forget. Some of our saints have been ill, very ill, deathly ill on occasions this year. Instead of tears of sadness, they were given special grace and joy today, LORD, because of YOUR son! 

The Divine nature of our GOD is revealed in these special moments. I love when we have done, for YOU, LORD, in preparation, in planning and in presenting the visual side of the time of JESUS leading up to Easter, that isn't what we ended with, but with HOPE and JOY! 

Ultimately, LORD, I come into your presence and say to YOU, "Lord, please take our pitiful, partial, but prayerful efforts and multiply them! What we did or didn't do, we did all that we did for you, in our love and in our devotion to YOUR Son, our Savior!

My goal is to see our freedom, laughter and joy become more and more a part of our every day walk with Christ. My goal is to duplicate every Sunday, the energy, the anticipation and the sheer audacity of people who really believe that YOU, LORD, want to visit your people.. I am praying right now, LORD, for your blessing to go forth from your Church, your People, your Bride… big marv

Tonight's Blog for March 30, 2013

In the short time before night falls we could focus on the details of the visits by JESUS to his disciples, or the fact
that HE first was seen by one of HIS women followers named Mary. We could talk about the angels, or the guards who were so afraid that they shook and became like dead men. Interesting discussion starters, but not as important as some questions that will help us to answer the greatest question of all for us.

Don't get me wrong, questions are good at helping us to get our focus tonight. Questions that get asked at night, like this one: "what about the body of the lady who died here in Monroe, from a senseless high speed accident?" Or "What about the dad who died an August night just one day from turning seventy?" Or "What about the hope that we have to be together again with those we love and miss?" Good questions demand an answer from the scriptures, to prepare us for that one, greatest of all questions. 

 Here is a part of my answer to each person who asks: "Did you know that there are some verses in our Bibles, written in the earliest of times for the Jewish folks, that give us amazing details and great hope?"  My answer, as is often my desire, is to share one of the scriptures that have spoken hope to me. In the book of Job, just before Psalms in your Bible, one of the oldest books in the BIble, is a book about a man and his suffering that has become synonomous with pain and grief. In Job 19: 25-27 we read, "I know that my redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand on the earth. And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God; I myself will see him with my own eyes—I, and not another. How my heart yearns within me!" 

My friend, Mark asked me about the Resurrection in the Old Testament. I was glad to say that this passage in Job is one of the best and most comforting I know. I love that it also hints at the reason that we still worship JESUS after 2000 years. Actually, I would want to say to Mark, and to each of you, "The greatest question of all time… demands the greatest answer!" 

The greatest question of all for us to ponder to night, "did it really happen?" With every part of my heart, I say "yes!" Along with the guards and sightings, and people who ate with Jesus, and touched him after the Resurrection, there is for me the fact of the empty Tomb. 

I also remind you that it isn't just a matter of the heart, but of the will of our Father in heaven. Because He loves us, we believe in His power. Because of HIS power, we love HIM. His love and His power came together to create this hope for us. GOD Bless you tonight, my dear friends… big marv

What we call "Good Friday" actually became the Sabbath at dark, "… there was evening and there was morning…."
We know that this "Good Friday began with our LORD, JESUS, nailed to a Cross, then was hastily buried in a borrowed tomb by Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus. During the time that HE was buried, even the staunchest, most fearless believer would have questioned the decision of JESUS to invade our world and put HIMSELF up as a ransom for us. But that is what HE did. My question tonight, as we prepare for the most earth shattering event in history, is, "why would Jesus allow this to happen?" 

We have spent most of our blog understanding and applying the Bible, but tonight, there is a great quote from "Lord of the Rings" that helps me to understand the WHY part! 

"Frodo Baggins: "I can't do this Sam." Sam Gamgee:  "I know. It's all wrong. By rights we shouldn't even be here. But we are. It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something." Frodo: "What are we holding on to Sam? Sam:

'That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo... and it's worth fighting for.'

With those words, Tolkien shows us a depth of understanding about the Cross. I have read more of the writings of C.S. Lewis, called 'Jack' by his friends. I understand that this is one of the places they disagreed. Lewis was more overtly "Christian" in his writing, while Tolkien tended to hide his meanings more deeply. One thing I know, tonight, is that his character Sam speaks wisdom and hope to us… you see, JESUS would have invaded the earth for us, I believe, and faced the horror of death, and the grave… for you and for me! 

We are "worth fighting for." HE won in the end, and we get to have eternal life, and Easter and Christian fellowship while we wait. Don't ever let anyone tell you that you aren't worth anything… YOU are the reason Jesus went to the grave… the power of God and the purpose of good that HE came to do all came together for this one thing. GOD Bless you tonight, dear saints! Low in the grave, HE lays? NO MORE!

Today's Blog for Maundy Thursday, March 28, 2013

Different churches and fellowship groups of Christians see this holiday season from different viewpoints and with
different historical views. This fact is no where more obvious than when you try to understand the background for this holy day. Maundy Thursday has been a day to remember two special events in the last days of Jesus before HE allowed Himself to die on the Cross. The two events were the washing of the apostles feet and the Last Supper, as we read in John 13. 

The ways that some folks celebrate this day is to have a special service that includes both of these parts. This service usually includes some traditional or even liturgical readings, in a very somber mood, to remind us of just how much it cost JESUS to give the Apostles this special day. If you were going to die in less than 24 hours, would you spend it on your knees, washing the feet of your followers? Would you then share the Passover meal with them? Would you spend hours praying while they slept? Would you allow your self to be arrested, to go through 6 mock trials, be flogged, and finally to die the death HE died? Jesus, you humble us by your willingness to do those things for us. 

As with each part of my walk with Christ, I try to evaluate my actions and motives to see if they are genuine. Have I started doing "christian things" so I will fit in? Do I do what I do because, somehow, it is expected of me? If you ever ask yourself those questions, you aren't alone. 

Tonight for me is a great time to reflect on the preparation we have been making together to make this weekend a special time. We chose the them of "Real…" for each of the 5 Sundays. 

Week one was about "Real Hope" and we talked about the Eyewitnesses. One eyewitness we talked about was Peter, who saw, who denied, and was reinstated by Jesus. 

Week two introduced the idea of "Real Life" and included a challenge to stop wading through mud, spiritually, and see that the Resurrection frees us to LIVE! Peter from week one is called on to give "Real Life" to a dear lady who died, was loved and needed, and was brought back to life by Peter's faith in JESUS. Tabitha was her name, and she was brought back to LIFE, Real LIFE!

Week three introduced us to the concept of "Real Love" as is seen in the biblical concept of Agape' Love. Jesus is at HIS most powerful as a teacher when He introduces us to the "Real Love" of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10. 

Week four reminded us that the cross, the "Real Cross" was accompanied by numerous mysterious events, and that there was a literal attempt at a "cover-up" that didn't work! Sunday, we will celebrate the real Resurrection of JESUS. I hope you will share with us. 

Tonight, I am praying for you, my dear reader, and by brothers and sisters who will worship that risen LORD, as He is Alive now, and there will never be a need to cover-up again the power and the purpose of the CROSS! Today's Blog, March 27, 2013

To hear us Christians talk, you would think that our happiness is based on the actions of other people, whether neighbors, relatives or friends. We often talk about impossible circumstances and events as though we were
spectators, or powerless participants, at the whim and choices of every one but our LORD who has given us some spectacular promises. Our Bible study material has been warning us about pulling verses out of their context, a warning that is very appropriate for many in our world today… but please know that the promise of Scripture is for us "Bible Verse Memorizers" too. Tonight's verses would make it into my "top 100 list" of much needed reinforcement. 

Luke 1:37 shows us why Jesus grew up to become an amazing man … an angel said of HIM and HIS miraculous birth, "For nothing will be impossible with God.”  We have Luke 1:38 to show us how to respond to GOD in a way that will insure that we receive HIS blessing… "And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” Believing in the impossible will only change our future if we also allow our faith to change our actions, like Mary did. This week, in preparing for the Resurrection, remember great ladies of faith like Mary, HIS mom. Don't just remember her, copy Mary and her response when you are tested, "I am the servant  of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” 

What are some other verses to remember when tested, or when in doubt, or when you just get tired of the silliness of all that we go through each day? 
How about Ephesians 3:20 "Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us…" 
How about 2 Corinthians 9:8, "And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work."  
How about Philippians 4:19, "And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus." 

How about… oh, you get it don't you? WE could go on and on with verses of hope and positive JOY, that is what this month is about, and that is what we are to be doing for each other! When we feel ourselves being surrounded by too much gloom and doom, especially from those of us who ought to be looking up and praising GOD for all that HE has done, remember these "Gold Nugget" verses. They definitely need to be understood in their context, but they are powerful enough to save us from giving in to the dark spirit of the age in which we live! GOD bless you tonight! big marv

I want to have you think about the nearly perfect balance that Jesus lived in his private walk. We have discussed the ways that HE grew, in wisdom, in physical realm, in favor with GOD and in favor with people. The balance is
shown in that HE was able to keep all four areas growing, simultaneously, and consistently. Amazing! That is one of the best parts of Jesus, and why many of us love HIM still. So perfect, and so balanced, and yet, we have recorded one moment of obsession by Jesus that put him out of favor with a group of people, the Samaritans. 

In writing about his obsession, Luke records some amazing observations in chapter 9. Jesus foretells his death, and gives a command to the disciples and to us to "take up our CROSS, daily, and follow HIM." Later, in the same chapter, there is an important verse that reveals HIS obsession, not with death, but with life! One of the keys to the week we are in, is that Jesus did this for us, for me. That verse is Luke 9:51, in the English Standard Version (©2001) "When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem" Verse 53 confirms that He was so firmly committed to His destiny with the cross, that the Samaritans would not receive him. 

Today, many Christians want to reprise the role of Samaritans. This role was first acted out by Peter, who told Jesus, "NO, LORD, NO!" What was Peter saying? That there was another way, around the cross, for Jesus to fulfill HIS task. Today, some are saying that His death on the cross isn't important, or even wanted! Others are saying that this particular sacrifice and gift to GOD for us is foolish, since we aren't all that bad anyway. Amazing, and rubbish, if you ask me. You see, if there were any other way to get around the Cross, GOD would have figured it out. Jesus prayed often with HIS Father. The last night before HE was crucified, he prayed with great vigor for this cup to pass away. Hebrews 5:7 says that He was heard and yet, HE still died. That is how important the Cross is. Since JESUS pursued this death, we too must be obsessed with making HIS death our own. 

For me, this is very personal and powerful. I am praying for you right now to become as obsessed with HIS death, as HE was with your life! I started this blog a few years ago so I could keep touch with a few friends, so we could push each other to grow. I revived it because the idea seemed very appropriate as we  prepare for Easter Sunday. With five Sundays this month,. we will also end the month on a Sunday. Will you begin the painful process of preparing your self, your heart to receive JESUS? HE won't disappoint you.

Tonight’s Blog March 25, 2013

Lord, please know that I am so honored to be a part of your Kingdom work. Tonight I praise YOU, LORD, for MCC, the folks who have been gently and kindly growing during our time to walk together. We chose to open our building to Homeschool kids, parents, and teachers to have a safe place to gather. In a few weeks, I get to teach a four-week class. LORD, help us to make the time valuable for the students who are a part of our time in class. Specifically, LORD, help me to be wise and gentle for YOU, and to be considerate of those in my class, and to be protective for the parents who trust us with their greatest treasure, their children.

Some of the topics we have discussed will include always protecting those who come into YOUR building. We want to set guidelines for adult/student interaction, to always have two adults in any situation. We want to keep our goal to fulfill Matthew 28:18-20, “Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

LORD, please give us wisdom this month to prepare our hearts and our questions to honor you. Since YOUR son, JESUS, came here and modeled perfectly the kind of growth that is possible, we will use the observation of HIS precious mom, Mary, as is recorded in Luke 2:52 as our guideline, if that is what you want! LORD, help us to know YOUR will and YOUR wisdom here. We are seeking your face. The way that JESUS grew can be modeled and can be taught, and can be understood. We also believe that we can ask questions, hold each other accountable, and know that we are in YOUR Will if we try to grow!

(Jesus grew in wisdom, LORD)   1. How can we know if we are growing in wisdom?

(Jesus grew in favor with YOU, GOD) 2. How can we know if we are growing in favor with God?

(Jesus grew in favor with people, LORD) 3. How can we know if we are growing in favor with people?

(Jesus grew to physical maturity, the perfect physical life) 4. How can we know if we are growing into physical maturity?

Sunday Night Blog March 24, 2013

I re-started this Blog earlier in March because of the History channel's choice of a topic near and dear to my heart! I mean the Bible. I love the Bible and have enjoyed sharing observations about the ten hour mini-series. Today's viewing includes the resuscitation of Lazarus. It also includes the growing tension between Jesus's TRUE BLUE DISCIPLES, and the Pharisees. Jesus gives us a definition for T.B.D.'s (TRUE BLUE DISCIPLES) In John 8:31-32! 

How will I know for sure that Jesus is MY LORD, and that I am a T.B.D.? Here is what Jesus says about being a T.B.D. "To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Remember, HE was talking to a group of disciples, including some pharisees. HE says that HE existed before Abraham! They wanted to stone HIM! 

With John 8:31 and 32 as a starting point, I want to give you a 7 question test, from the New Testament, that will help you to evaluate a few areas of need so WE together can be come "G.T.B.D's" (GROWING True Blue Disciples!) 
  1. T.B.D. Question # 1 "Do I continue to hold on to His teaching? Has HIS truth set me free?" This question comes from John 8:31-32
  2. T.B.D. Questions # 2 "Am I ashamed of being identified with Jesus and his T.B.D.'s?" This question comes from Mark 8:38
  3. T.B.D. Question # 3 "Do I bear fruit for Jesus?" This question comes from John 15:8
  4. T.B.D. Question # 4 "Do I really believe that all I have is HIS, and have committed my self to being a manager or a steward of HIS resources? Do I still think that I am still the owner?" This question comes from Luke 14:33
  5. T.B.D. Question # 5 "Do I Love Jesus above all?" This question comes from Matthew 10:37-42
  6. T.B.D. Question # 6 "Do I love other people?" This question comes from John 13:35
  7. T.B.D. Question # 7 "Have I taken my cross and followed JESUS, DAILY?" This final question comes from Luke 9:23
Please, remember this: T.B.D.'s are people I love! These three letters stand for True Blue Disciples. I not only love T.B.D.'s but I want to spend the rest of my life finding others who want to be T.B.D.'s! My prayer tonight, and my last thought for this Blog, is for the True Church of Jesus Christ to walk together, in unity and in growth, until we all attain to the FULL Measure of the stature of Jesus Christ. My friend, Zebediah had a big fan, his mom. They often partnered together to help folks in Rapid City who were being physically abused. One reason they cared so much was because of the real physical pain they had inflicted on them by others. They also dealt with persecution because of their faith in JESUS and their insistence on living lives of sacrifices for those who were being hurt. When you read his words, you will see why Zebediah had a great fan in his mom, and in me. GOD bless the reading of your words of peace and comfort from your wounded warriors! Easter this year will be sweeter if we remember the deeds and promises of our Jesus Christ, our MESSIAH. 

"I was asked to write about Easter coming up. Particularly in regard to this Easter being so different, as my mother passed away last year, and is now with the Lord.

As I think of Easter I remember many things my mother taught me. Something I wrote in another blog sums it up quite well I think. “ The war we fight was won long ago. When that most perfect servant declared on Calvary’s top "it is finished". Since we have only to fight the battles that remain, of this pre-concluded war.” We are told in 1 Timothy 6:12 to “fight the good fight” and by Paul we are told what to fight with (Galatians 5:22-23) but all of this comes down to a simple thing, "Love your neighbor as yourself and love the Lord thy God above all else." 

Easter is a celebration of the example we were given by Christ and with it the responsibility. Love acts not for what is received but for the sake of those for whom we act . It is written that we share in the death of Christ, (Romans 6:10-11) and in many ways a born again Christian does. One of the fruits of the spirit is even longsuffering. Because we share in the death of Christ the closer we grow to him the better we are at putting away the temptations of this world and the better we are at pursuing the spiritual things of God. It is important not to stop here as we also share in the resurrection of Christ (Easter) . Because of the resurrection we can know love that is real, because of this we can produce the fruit of the spirit. For this cause do we fight that which is the good fight. This is the challenge my mother lived and taught us as we grew up. This is the story my mother repeated every Easter, to be sure we knew. All modern frivolity aside we are called to serve and Easter is not only a celebration of Christ death but a reminder of his death for us and a celebration of his resurrection and his life. That is our hope and our calling. This year my mother is beyond this world and it is now up to me to tell the little ones of Christ and our hope, that they may continue and know love truly. It will be strange indeed without mom there, but I know she to shares in the resurrection. One day, I will see her again in the kingdom of God."

Have you thought lately about your reason for being a Disciple for Jesus? Have you asked your self about your level of commitment to him? My friends always seem to ask me the toughest questions! One was asked by my friend Tony. He asked, "How do you know if you are totally committed to GOD? How will you know?"
Another friend named Brian asked a similar but still tough question,  "What privileges will I receive from joining this Church?" This question came after a few weeks of classes.  My answer, "let me tell you, that is the wrong question, since membership doesn't give privileges, but responsibilities!" What I meant to say was that we are more interested in "True Blue Discipleship." We are more interested in making sure folks are going to Heaven, and that each of us is using our time well for our LORD. Privilege follows responsibility. 

I have been thinking about this test, the "True Blue Disciples Test" since we started this blog, and since I started preparing for a class for the young men in our Home school group. I need to look back on the day or the week, and ask myself a few questions. Here are a few that I am considering. What do you think? How would you respond if I asked you?  

  1. Remember, these questions were for us to use as thought starters. This weekend's sermon includes a question that each of us should be able to ask, about the Cross, the Real Cross that Jesus accepted for us. The question, "Have I taken my Cross and followed HIM, daily?" When we can say, "yes," then we will be ready for my friend, Tony's question. I believe we will have an answer for my friend, Brian too. Total commitment includes a cross, daily, and excludes any personal expectations or privileges. The cost of discipleship is exactly what we allow it to be. ALL that we are, no more no less. 

LAST Question each time: "Have you been truthful about everything we have discussed?" Without truthfulness, we can't be growing Disciples… GOD BLESS you, Marv

Blog for Thursday Night, March 21, 2013

I have enjoyed the memories of my time in that old house in Indiana. Dad had lots of things to do to make it livable for us over the years. He replaced the roof, insulated every outside wall, put two windows over every single pane window of the time. Another thing he did was to replace or even move the placement of outside doors to help with heat and to turn extra rooms into apartments. By the time mom and dad retired, they had totally changed that old house. One door had to be replaced because my brother and I decided that we could pick dad up and carry him outside, to "whip him." All he did was to expand his chest, and spread his arms and by that simple act of resistance he broke the door, and the windows on the side. Oh, he also drive me to the hospital for stitches in my hands. That was an interesting trip back home from Bible College!

I want to expand on the idea of "Doors" with you for a second. Doors are necessary because they keep cold weather out, protect you inside at night and allow us to have peace of mind as we sleep or work. Doors are good things, even if they can cause stitches if you try to "whip" your dad, whether it is for fun or not! 

Did you know that doors, in the Bible carry similar but eternal meanings? There is a door into Heaven, that John the apostle describes in Revelation 4:1, an open door that allows John to see what we will see when we get into the presence of Christ forever. In Revelation 21:21, we read of twelve doors into heaven, each real door is a single Pearl, hence, the "pearly gates." The way to this Door, according to Jesus in Matthew 7:13-14, is narrow, and difficult, and many won't accept. John later reminds us that JESUS is the door, or the gate to the sheepfold, where we will be safe, and secure, and loved.

We could develop this idea even more, but not every door is open. Paul found a door to be closed when he was trying to go to Galatia to preach. According to Acts 16:6-7, the Holy Spirit wouldn't let them go in, so they had a vision of an open door, to preach and share the Good News in Philippi. This open door came about because another door was shut! 

We here at MCC are praying for open door opportunities! For us, the open door is a group of men who eat donuts and study, or a lovely group of ladies who find continually new ways to grow, or one of our many and growing small groups, or our building being used for H.I.S. parents and children who homeschool but love to meet in our building on Mondays to encourage each other and to grow! 

The key for me is that the door to my heart, and for our Church is found in JESUS, as we see in Acts 4:12, "Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved."

Today was the first day of Spring. If you pay attention to that sort of thing, it was still a cool day, and the wind still blows right through, even I felt that way. The other day, Saturday March 16th's blog, featured the old farm house covered with snow, with a roof that would need replaced soon. where I grew for most of my childhood.  Dad allowed me to help with the roof, and since I was young, I felt invincible and even climbed onto the roof on the second story (didn't even think about or try to help with the third story roof!) I was a part of the family, and dad was dad. Anyway, that place continues to come to my mind anytime I hear the word "HOME". 

In reading through 1 and 2 Peter for our small group Bible Study preparation time, I was reminded of another use for the word "Home". This word means people, as in relationships and caring and orderliness in our private walk with others. Peter reminds that we are the "Household" of GOD. We prosper when we walk together in humility and grace toward GOD and each other. We are happier if we have rules for relationships so we can know how we are doing, in regard to each other. 

I have observed that those who walk together with each other in LOVE, will also walk closer to GOD. These household rules differ from one family to another. 1 Peter 3 spends a few words for wives, and for husbands, before turning to a few specific "rules" to live by if we wish to inherit a blessing. I love that Peter quotes from Psalms 34: 12-16, his songbook from his youth as a Jewish child. If you look closely at Peter's quote, you will find that "all of you, (not just husbands and wives) should do certain things, have certain actions describe us as a people. 

These actions include harmony or likemindedness. We should add to that the ability to be sympathetic with one another. Three traits are very similar, to love one another, to be compassionate, and to be humble minded.  Our household rules will prevent us from returning evil for evil. Following all of these, Peter says that we would THEN be ready to inherit a blessing. 

How are you doing? How is your household? What household rules do you need to add or modify so you can "inherit a blessing?" One insight from the "household rules of 1 Peter 3:15,  is his reminder always be ready to give an answer, when asked, for the reason you still hope! Hope is such a fleeting gift. In our household, we will hope, we will live with rules that help us to see CHRIST better, and we will do all of this with gentleness, respect and a good conscience, just as Peter asked! There are at least four purposes available for every small group. One is to loving group. This means we are to find ways to know each other and to care for each other in LOVE. The Second of the four purposes is to be a learning group. Not just to learn facts or to memorize the Bible, but to engage our brains in the pursuit of godly wisdom. Another purpose, our third option for groups, is to be a “Do” group. These groups excel in doing the jobs, works, and activities that need done in our church or community. Finally, the fourth option for a group is to be a “Deciding” group.
 
Our small groups have taken very seriously the task of loving and learning. A word of caution would be wise at this time. Many today read the bible in a more subjective manner, carrying some preconceived ideas to the text. Our lesson the last few weeks has been teaching us to ask, "what is the A.I.M." (the Author’s Intended Meaning) for each passage. Mark Moore’s material, ICR, can be seen at http://markmoore.org/. In this material we find ways to read and understand the Bible to help it be more effective and powerful in our walk for Christ today.
 
Let me give you an example. In Acts 20, after leaving controversy and problems behind in Acts 19, Paul arrives to preach on his way to Jerusalem. The people gather to hear him preach. Just like today, right? No. In Acts 20:7 we read that “we (the believers) were gathered to break bread together.” This is a key lesson we can learn if we seek the A.I.M. The Author is Dr. Luke, and he was there as a witness. Paul wanted to leave early the next day. Still, they were gathered together for the Lord’s Supper.
 
Two accidental or secondary items can take our attention. One is the mention that they met on the first day of the week. Second is the mention that their purpose was to take break bread. Other observations would include the speaker, Paul or the audience, including a young man named Eutychus who slept, fell out of a window, and was “taken up dead” before Paul took him in his arms and said, “Do not be alarmed, his life is in him.”
 
Each of these items can legitimately be a strong focus of discussion and or even for disagreement. Tonight, I can say conclusively that none of these items should be the key to understanding our passage. The author was reminding us of Paul's stated task, to be in Jerusalem, if possible, by Pentecost. (Acts 20:16)
 
Please understand that I am not trying to oversimplify what is one of our most important and difficult tasks. If we are to grow in CHRIST, our starting point is to be in the WORD, even before we change our habits, or even our hearts. Anyone, even a parrot can say these words, read them out loud, or hear them. Our task is to discover together what GOD the Holy Spirit, the true and original AUTHOR of the Bible intends us to learn. Ask yourself this question, “WHAT is HIS A.I.M.?”

Monday Night Blog for 3.18.2013
 
Last night we introduced a passage in the Old Testament, Jeremiah 29. Tonight, I would like to build on those teachings. This blog is a joy for me to share, as I find ways to help redeem these times, these opportunities, as well as all the obstacles we find in these modern times. There is no question that our LORD wants us to prosper, but many find ways to misquote the Bible to make prosperity a right for all Christians. Some even call this the “Prosperity Gospel” and make it for all who become Christians. Some teach us to “name and claim” promises from GOD, almost expecting GOD to do what we wish, if we command HIM to! Just a few cautionary thoughts for us tonight!
 
Our specific passage tonight, Jeremiah 29:1-11, is a great example. We can plumb the depths of those verses for hope and for a plan. What to do while we are waiting for the last days, for Christ to return? We could wait, and do nothing, praying for our LORD to return and destroy the world, which would usher in eternity. Many waited in Paul’s time, and many today would be satisfied to wait.
 
I have a suggestion, from Jeremiah 29. Plant a garden. Pray for the prosperity of our country. Build houses and families. We can all dive deep into becoming salty Christian. We can all dive deeper into the world we live in and become the light of the world.  Rather than demanding that the creator of the universe magically and personally make our days better, pray for wisdom from HIM that we find ways to “redeem the time” and bless all those around us.
 
Let’s take this to an even greater level. I love people who plant gardens for others to harvest. I love tree planters, who don’t just plant trees for today or for themselves. My hero’s are those who plant to produce fruit for a harvest that isn’t for them, or even for their children, but for two or three generations in the future. I dislike those who demand that every action, all energy and every thought of life should be for their own personal comfort and needs. Plant something for someone that you can’t harvest.
 
A word of warning for those who wish to stay on the sidelines and stay disengaged during these trying times. The nation of Israel had GOD’s reminder that they were to be “light to the gentiles,” as we can read in Isaiah 42:6 or 49:6. If we as a nation or as believers cease to be that LIGHT, Jesus can’t stay with us or bless us or use us. Our self-imposed “captivity” becomes permanent.

I am glad to be watching the Bible on the History Channel tonight, because of the amazing true story of one of the greatest of all people in the Old Testament. His name is Daniel. He has a lot to teach us about living in “Babylon.” Instead of fighting every single thing he disagreed with, Daniel picked and chose those situations to assist and to ignore. He chose to pray, to walk with his GOD, and to help his friends to prosper. Although in captivity in a horribly hostile society, Daniel chose to walk with GOD, and with God’s people. He also chose to make himself available to the conquering king so that the people of Israel could survive, even thrive while in this hostile place. He was able to carefully walk in holiness and still interact with a corrupt society. 

Remembering Daniel and the nation of Israel in captivity reminds me that we are to chose our battles, to interact with our society, and to help others to do well. Daniel knew about the prophecies of Jeremiah about a king named Cyrus, about the 70 years of captivity. He definitely knew these were promises for the captive nation of Israel, GOD’s chosen people.  These promises from Jeremiah may be read in a letter he wrote from GOD, in Jeremiah 29. The verse I want to consider tonight, Jeremiah 29:11, goes like this: 

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

There are a number of verses in the New Testament that are pulled out of context, or are applied to modern people incorrectly. There are a number of similar misquoted verses in the Old Testament. Daniel would have known this one specific verse since he knew Jeremiah, and knew about Cyrus and the 70 years of captivity. This verse is often quoted in the circles of Christians, concerning GOD’s plans for us. I really believe these verses in Jeremiah 29: 4 -11

“This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says to all those I carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: “Build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce. Marry and have sons and daughters; find wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, so that they too may have sons and daughters. Increase in number there; do not decrease. Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.” Yes, this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: “Do not let the prophets and diviners among you deceive you. Do not listen to the dreams you encourage them to have. They are prophesying lies to you in my name. I have not sent them,” declares the Lord. This is what the Lord says: “When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will come to you and fulfill my good promise to bring you back to this place. For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Yes, GOD wants us to prosper. He can do all the things in each generation. He can help us to prosper. He wants us to be successful. But, GOD always wants from us total allegiance to HIM whether or not we prosper! HE wants us to hold to and to live by the values that make us as Christians different from those who aren’t Christian.  Does this apply to our personal prosperity, national prosperity, and prosperity in each community or church group? I am just asking you to consider this: whether or not HE does want us to prosper, many have made this single verse, and single quality of prosperity to be the cornerstone of our hope in JESUS! I personally believe that we are better off if we DO follow Jesus and love HIM! Whether we prosper or not isn't demanded or expected, but can be a part of HIS plan for us as well. 

In light of the death, burial, and Resurrection that will be the focus for us Christians this month, my prayer is that we will see that our verse, Jeremiah 29:11 was to give hope to Israel in a time of real hostility and captivity. For what purpose? The Messiah was to be born of a virgin, live and die for us, and come back to life! These and other prophecies from Isaiah and other places couldn’t be fulfill if the nation of Israel ceased to exist! So, if we prosper, it is for the cause of JESUS to prosper! IF he allows us to suffer for HIM, it is for the cause of JESUS! Either way we win if we stay true to HIM. How? We are to chose our battles, to interact with our society, and to help others to do well. GOD Bless you tonight! marv

What an amazing GOD we serve! As I prepare for bed, for sleep, for morning and for our worship time, my prayer, LORD, is to see YOU and your people as YOU see us. In last night's blog, I put a picture of my family that I hadn't seen before. It was troubling but in a good way because it reminded me of my lovely and good family. I saw YOU, LORD, in the faces of my family, my precious and wonderful family. I have prayed for each of my family so many times through the years, and even today, feel a bond with my mom, my brother, and my sisters that I have a hard time explaining. I know that part of our bond is the pain of separation by time, separation in different states, and the separation we all have felt since my dad died. When dad died, part of my childhood innocence died as well. I miss the way that he made me feel safe and loved. I miss home. 

Home used to be a house, at least for me. If I close my eyes, I can see our old farm house, in New Palestine Indiana. This picture isn't great quality, but it shows the 14 room farm house I called home for over half of my childhood. Dad worked miracles on the house. We planted the Blue Spruce trees in front. They started out less than a foot tall, and now tower over the house, blocking the house from sight.  "HOME" is so much a part of why I personally think of death, of heaven, of seeing those who love Jesus, and being together with them forever… yes, that is what HOME means to me. 

When dad died, my friend read from 2 Corinthians 5: 1-10 -- " For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. Now the one who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.

Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. For we live by faith, not by sight. We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad."

What an amazing passage, what an amazing GOD we serve. Home has been a house, or a church building, or a person. Whether it is my love for my wife and children, or my desire to see Jesus, soon, we all will be with HIM. Real hope, real life and real love all work together to produce in me an image, and idea, and an ideal: "Real HOME." Worshipping GOD and serving HIM together with others of kindred spirit, that is HOME.  Remember this, dear friends. As we finish the half way point of the month, and as we prepare for Easter sunday, I can tell you that I can't wait for heaven, for the reunion that it will be. I miss HOME.                      marv

We are preparing for the most special and precious of Holidays for us Christians, at least that is what most of us remember from our childhood! What's not to like with family, chocolate, dressing up in nice clothes, and the going to church together. I am not sure of the picture I have included is an Easter picture, it could be, because it features my mom, Thelma Flowers, with a green dress, a smile, and a corsage. She is standing between my two beautiful sisters, (Mary who is smiling, and Myla who isn't!) Both of my sisters are beautiful, but only one was smiling. My brother Marty is always handsome, and also is smiling, and so is my Dad with no tie, but a suit coat on for only the third or fourth time i can remember! Marv (me), the guy on the back row, with the "Frankinstein" non- smiling face, and a skinny tie, appears to wish he were somewhere else. 

I am not really sure if there were something wrong,  I wish I could remember! What I do know is that I love my family, and I am so glad my mom and dad loved me. I wish I had appeared happier, but I am O.K. with the observation that I was at least uncomfortable, if not in pain, ha! Family and Holidays can be painful AND beautiful at the same time. Now that our Dad is gone, any picture like this one makes me wish I had been a better son… no guilt, just an observation. For my last birthday, my mom called to wish me the best. I reminded her that she is the one who was willing to give birth to a son who weighed ten pounds! Next time I see mom, she owes me a smack in the face, but probably won't collect!

As Easter gets nearer, my prayer is that we can get our focus more and more specifically on the mind of Christ, on the reason why HE was willing to invade the earth, and on what HE expects from us because of HIS victory over death. I want to finish with a verse of the Bible that is often quoted, more often ignored, but seems one that is misquoted to our shame. What verse am I talking about? Revelation 21:8, (But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”) In this verse near the last of our bibles, we find eight groupings of people for whom the Resurrection is not comforting but an eternally, and personally reminder that some will choose to reject the hope and peace of JESUS by their lifestyles, their character, and their choice. 

I wanted to give you this observation as we finished the half way mark in March, and get closer and closer to Easter Sunday! GOD, please reveal to us what we must do to know for sure that we are with YOU, and that we will be yours because of your love?

What a treat to share this blog last night with a guest writer, Craig. He is a dear brother and a delight. Tonight is another treat. I had asked Scottie Gentry, one of our leaders too, to help us see the reality of this season, THE LAMB, Jesus is showing us HIS love by the life and death he endured as our Passover Lamb. What follows is Scottie's writing. He is a gifted communicator, and i am blessed to partner with him. 

Scottie Gentry: "Good evening dear friends! I hope that you are enjoying the last bites of winters chill as we move towards winters end. Marv has given me the great honor of sharing my thoughts with you tonight. He specifically asked me for a lamb story.  I hope you enjoy my musing tonight and, hopefully, my musings cause you to take pause and appreciate God's lamb. In a nutshell, I don't have just one lamb story, I have three parts of our story.

We have, as of yesterday morning, 5 lambs. They are cute and cuddly. They bleat for their mothers, frolic with each other, and for the adults, cause no end of bother. Yet, they are special, each and every one. Interestingly, not a one is perfect. Every one has a blemish; whether it is a slight blemish in their coat or their entire coat is mottled or the head is perhaps slightly deformed.  These lambs are like us. They are innocent for a time. They trust us for now, willingly follow us, and let us comfort them. They seek us out for safety and refuge. However, with every day that passes, they become more and more skittish and adult like. The run from us, ignore our voices, and hide from us. They are losing their innocence and choosing their nature over their shepherd. This after only one week!  How like these sheep are we!

Last weekend, we had to tend to our lambs. We had to tag them so that we could know them. We had to vaccinate them to protect them from their gluttony. We had to dock their tails to keep them healthy.  Each lamb, of the three oldest, was separated from the flock and removed from the pen. I then gently held it while Victoria docked the tail, gave it its shot, and pierced its ear.  Throughout the entire process, each lamb cried out in pain. We, each of us, flinched as their pain (at our hands) reached a crescendo. However, we could not stop. To do so would have been to let the lamb grow stunted and sickly. To live a half life in pain. We inflicted pain to protect each lamb from greater pain later on. The first two lambs, when we set them down, ran to the comforting embrace of the flock. The third lamb however curled up in my arms, snuggled into my coat, and went to sleep. He realized that what had happened had been for his benefit. Instead of shunning us for cutting out his sickness, he embraced us. Let me ask this, which lamb are you? Do you flee from the shepherd once the trial is over or do you embrace Him?

Each lamb we have is the perfect picture of innocence. It is so naive, so trusting, so willing to let us guide it. Had I the desire today, I could lead that third lamb to slaughter and he would willingly follow me to the killing floor. The other two lambs would, at a week and a half old, already be a fight.  The trusting lamb reminds me of another lamb. A lamb that was without blemish. A lamb that came with a purpose. A lamb that said "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done." (Luke 22:42). Imagine both sides of this sacrifice. God, looking at his precious Lamb, at his innocence and his absolute trust in the Father, and knowing the pain that was about to come. Then look at the Lamb, Jesus, also knowing what was coming. God led Him to the killing floor and Jesus walked there with the full knowledge of what was to come. The most astounding thing is that they, God AND Jesus, did it for me. They, God AND Jesus, did it for you. They did it because they loved us. 

So, to bring this full circle, look at yourselves. Do you know your shepherd? Do you still have your childlike innocence about you or have you chosen to emulate the world? When God removes the things (sin) in our lives that is separating us from Him, even though it causes us pain, do you seek comfort in the world or in Him? Lastly, when you look at Jesus AND Gods sacrifice, what do you see? Do you see love? Do you see devotion? Do you see God and Jesus?

2000 years ago a lamb, a perfect lamb, came to this earth for one express purpose...to save you and to save me. 2000 years ago, this Lamb walked onto the killing floor willingly for you and for me. He followed His Shepherd. Will you?"

Wednesday nights usually find me taking a few moments to stop after our small group time to pray and find a way to thank YOU, LORD for allowing me to partner with YOU here in Monroe. Tonight i feel your love in the gentle and kind folks here who have allowed us to see your power at work. Tonight I want to thank you for the kind folks who extended the request to us to come here and to walk together with folks who have loved you and served you faithfully. 

One such brother, Craig, has been able to help me understand the ways of the Michigan folks, to walk patiently with you and with him as we seek loving change. He has allowed me to be more and more bold as we pray to YOU, daily, LORD for your word to bear fruit. I asked Craig to share a night's blog, knowing that he would polish the words, pray over your will, and come up with a challenge worthy of the Noble task we have accepted as leaders for your church. Specifically, tonight, here are the thoughts that Craig shares. Enjoy and be challenged!

" I’m Possible," by Craig Savonen

As we near the annual Easter celebration commemorating the Resurrection, which we can choose to celebrate daily, it is awesome to view and review what was said and transpired in those days that Jesus walked the Earth.

As in the episode when Jesus counseled the rich, young man (and His disciples) how very difficult (i.e.impossible) it is to navigate the path to heaven on our own………

When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, “Who then can be saved?”  Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”  Matthew 19:25-26 NIV

….while reminding and assuring us of the greatness of the Creator of the Heavens and Earth.

But God raised Him from the dead, freeing Him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on Him.”  Acts 2:24 NIV

As with many long held self-perceptions or thought patterns we acquire and unintentionally protect from the past, if we look closely, Jesus will flip them upside down (or right side up, actually!). 

Yes, Jesus, the sinless King of Kings paid the ultimate price for each and every one of us through extreme torture and death. 

But, he did not arise by the ‘skin of his teeth’ or limp weakly into the sunlight.  Rather, he burst forth from the earth in full physical and spiritual power and glory, even after having paid the price for our sins in full! 

The immense power bequeathed to the Son of God is such that it was impossible for death to keep its hold on Him.  No debate or negotiation accepted with the defeated powers of darkness. 

God changed the impossible to I’m possible!"

What do we know about real LOVE? Real Hope would be easy to know, since hope can't rise about the object we look forward to seeing, or the place we look forward to going or the person we look forward to becoming. Real Hope, we found out is what JESUS taught us by helping Peter to be reinstated as an apostle and leader! Real Life also is found when we are no longer afraid of death. Then, we find life as Peter passed on to a lady in Acts, named Tabitha. Sadly most people fine despair and hopelessness instead.  As I finish this day, I am beginning to turn my focus on our third topic, "real love."  

I can only imagine what some entertainment person might dream up to get you to think about love, to watch a show, sing a song, or read a book. Can you see it now? The people involved are willing to do anything, to say anything, no matter how shameful or silly, all for the sake of love. Oh, wait, you can watch that nearly every evening. The true reality of our age and time and nation is that most people spend all of their time and money looking for love. When they finally have it, they discover that they have been fooled. The very thing they seek isn't really love, but a cheap imitation or a momentary expenditure of energy and passion. Sadly, most of what is called love, really isn't love, is it? 

The second night of the movie, "The Bible" gives us a graphic, and sad example of misguided love. To tell you the truth, I really didn't enjoy the part of Samson, and especially the graphic way that he betrayed his GOD in his pursuit of love. Don't get me wrong, I "love" "love." Even though I knew what would happen, I felt bad for Samson when he was betrayed by his "love", Delilah. 

Here is the key question that I want to mull over tonight, "Was this really love?" Did Samson show GOD his faithfulness and purity in his life? NO, but in his death, GOD allowed him to find revenge. What is revenge, but another cheap imitation of real love, an attempt to prove that our love was true by hurting the hurters. Love is a word that I dare say has created more confusion and depression and resentment than it has helped! 

What about Jesus? What did HE have to say about love? He was very revolutionary in HIS thoughts, and in HIS actions. Here is what I think, Jesus shows us more about LOVE, real LOVE, than HE talks about it. Rather than trying to define love, HE just lived it. IF HE allows us to live for 100 more years, we won't be any closer to understanding LOVE than this one simple statement by Jesus, followed up by the Cross and by the Empty Tomb. What is that statement? " 

"My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends." 

John 15:12-13 is where we read his revolutionary COMMAND to love, to SACRIFICE our own demands, and follow HIM to the Cross. Yes, we could watch "the Bachelor" or some other reality show. OR, we could Watch Jesus, and find from HIM the truth.  One last thought for the night, "LOVE will cost us all we have, but it is worth it because HE is worth it!"
