What we call "Good Friday" actually became the Sabbath at dark, "… there was evening and there was morning…."
We know that this "Good Friday began with our LORD, JESUS, nailed to a Cross, then was hastily buried in a borrowed tomb by Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus. During the time that HE was buried, even the staunchest, most fearless believer would have questioned the decision of JESUS to invade our world and put HIMSELF up as a ransom for us. But that is what HE did. My question tonight, as we prepare for the most earth shattering event in history, is, "why would Jesus allow this to happen?"
We have spent most of our blog understanding and applying the Bible, but tonight, there is a great quote from "Lord of the Rings" that helps me to understand the WHY part!
"Frodo Baggins: "I can't do this Sam." Sam Gamgee: "I know. It's all wrong. By rights we shouldn't even be here. But we are. It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something." Frodo: "What are we holding on to Sam? Sam:
'That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo... and it's worth fighting for.'
With those words, Tolkien shows us a depth of understanding about the Cross. I have read more of the writings of C.S. Lewis, called 'Jack' by his friends. I understand that this is one of the places they disagreed. Lewis was more overtly "Christian" in his writing, while Tolkien tended to hide his meanings more deeply. One thing I know, tonight, is that his character Sam speaks wisdom and hope to us… you see, JESUS would have invaded the earth for us, I believe, and faced the horror of death, and the grave… for you and for me!
We are "worth fighting for." HE won in the end, and we get to have eternal life, and Easter and Christian fellowship while we wait. Don't ever let anyone tell you that you aren't worth anything… YOU are the reason Jesus went to the grave… the power of God and the purpose of good that HE came to do all came together for this one thing. GOD Bless you tonight, dear saints! Low in the grave, HE lays? NO MORE!
